Redeem Qantas Points for worthwhile rewards

So once you’ve joined Qantas Frequent Flyer for free and started earning points, it’s time to redeem them. And this is where savvy travellers can unlock a range of seriously lucrative rewards in 2024.

Here at The Champagne Mile, we’ve written about many different and valuable ways that members can use Qantas Frequent Flyer points. When it comes to spending Qantas Points, most frequent flyers traditionally opt for Flight awards and business class upgrades.

However, in the midst of COVID-19, ongoing restrictions on air travel mean that an increasing number of us are looking to redeem points on the ground. At present, we’re finding that many Qantas Frequent Flyer members are opting to redeem points in the following ways:

Qantas Hotels: Frequent Flyer members have the opportunity to redeem from over 200,000 hotel and accommodation options worldwide. At present Qantas Hotels redemption rates, it’s possible to extract 0.785 cents value per Qantas Point. Combine this with sharp discounts in some of Australia’s top properties, and it isn’t hard to see why this might be an attractive points redemption option right now.

Qantas gift cards: The value that can be extracted from gift cards is typically much lower than Qantas Classic Reward Flights or upgrades. However, gift cards are a convenient redemption option for those who can’t travel right now. It’s possible to extract a value of 0.576 cents per point, with retailers including Myer, David Jones, and Priceline.

Classic Rail Journeys: Did you know that Qantas Points unlock luxury rail journeys around Australia? Classic Rail Rewards is a tie-up between Qantas and Journey Beyond, and it allows QFF members to use points for all-inclusive journeys onboard The Ghan, Indian Pacific, the Overland, and Great Southern.

Alternatively, when it comes time to take a flight again, you could look at redeeming your frequent flyer points for flights in Qantas A380 First Class, Emirates First Class, Cathay Pacific, or other OneWorld airlines. You could even save them up for an amazing around-the-world trip.

Of course, if you’re happy to pay for cheap flights, you can also choose to spend your points on goods at the Qantas Marketplace, on car hire, or on access to airport lounges with a Qantas Club membership.

    Thank you Adele,
I’ve just signed up my 85 year old Aunty for the Qantas frequent flyer at no charge. We’re taking her on her first visit to the UK in March 2020 to visit the Isle of Wight where her parents were born, with 5 days in London as well as Paris. Thank you so much for this tip on joining. She is super, super excited.
    Regards Vicki

Hi Adele I am new to the whole ‘frequent flyer’ program mythology – your article is a godsend as I didn’t really like the idea of forking out the $99.00 fee – it makes me wonder why on earth Qantas are charging it f it can be gotten for free?
I am going on my ‘first european holiday’ ever next year and it will be great to get some points under my belt so I will be an avid subscriber to your website – many thanks Adele.

    1. Avatar for Adele

Hi Ross, despite many different ways to join for free, unfortunately some people do still pay for Qantas Frequent Flyer membership. I’m glad you came across our post and were able to save on the joining fee. Enjoy your holiday!

    Hi Adele,
I am from India and Me and my wife just joined the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program as we will be travelling to Australia soon. How do I know if it was free or will get charged at a later date. Our membership nos are . Can you check and confirm? We had also travelled to Australia in February 2019. Can we get this flight added to the frequent flyer membership, and if so, how do we go about? Would appreciate your reply soonest, as I have to go about booking my flight to Australia.
    Tks in advance.

    1. Avatar for Adele

Hi Henry, I’ve redacted the membership numbers you originally included in your comment. In answer to your questions, there will be no fee charged for your existing Qantas Frequent Flyer membership at a later date. To link your frequent flyer number to a previous booking, you’d need to get in touch with Qantas directly to check if it is possible to attach it to a flight back from February – as a general travel website, we don’t have any official relationship with the program or hold any of your personal information, so I’m unable to look into this for you. For your upcoming flight, if you are planning to book directly with Qantas, ensure you are logged in when you book, and your frequent flyer number should attach automatically to the booking.
