Want more Qantas Points? Discover Qantas Shopping

Earn and redeem points and access exclusive bonus point offers all via the Qantas Shopping portal!

The Qantas Shopping portal (previously named the Qantas Shopping Online Mall) unlocks the ability for Qantas Frequent Flyer members to earn Qantas Points when shopping online.

It houses a surprisingly extensive number of retailers, all offering a tidy serve of Qantas Points when you shop from the couch. Popular brands include David Jones, Apple, The Iconic, Microsoft and Country Road.

How does Qantas Shopping work?

Earning Qantas Points via shopping is quite simple, and it works like this: Browse your chosen brands via the Qantas Shopping portal. Once you’re ready to buy, you’ll be prompted to log in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

The Qantas Shopping portal then re-directs you to that retailer. By tracking your cookies, Qantas Shopping is able to register your purchase and award you a set number of points for each $1 you spend.

Whether it’s Christmas or back to school, simply shopping brands like Samsung, Bose and Dyson via the Qantas Shopping portal could offer a generous stack of points.

How many points can I earn with Qantas Shopping?

The number of points varies between retailers, but generally, between 1 and 8 points are offered as standard.

At various times of the year (think Christmas and the Mid-Year sales), the Qantas Shopping portal runs bonus point specials, boosting the number of points that consumers can earn for their online spend. At the time of writing, most retailers appear to be offering between 4-7 bonus points promotions.

These specials can be very lucrative. Some retailers choose to double or even triple the number of points earned during a bonus point offer period.

You never know, spoiling dad with a Father’s Day gift from the Qantas Shopping portal could see your share of hundreds (if not thousands) of bonus Qantas Points land in your frequent flyer account.

You can easily check the full list of retailers and their applicable bonus point earn rates via the main webpage, and it’s seriously worth doing so with over 100 stores across an array of shopping categories to peruse. Be sure to check the individual retailer terms gift cards information too.

Step by step guide to Qantas Shopping

It’s very easy to shop via the Qantas Shopping portal, and you can earn a significant amount of Qantas Points by doing so. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide below:

  1. Browse the Qantas Shopping website. Ensure that your cookies are enabled so that your purchase can be tracked. Qantas Shopping is mobile-optimised, making for an easy online shop from the palm of your hand.
  1. Choose your brand or retailer.
  1. Click ‘Shop Now’ to visit your chosen retailer’s site. You’ll be prompted to enter your Qantas Frequent Flyer login details and will then be automatically redirected to the retailer’s website to shop online.
  1. Shop online as normal, being careful not to navigate away from the page before your transaction is completed. This will ensure that the Qantas Online Shopping portal is able to track your purchase.

Your Qantas Points should then appear in your Frequent Flyer account within 90 days of your purchase. Too easy!

If you’re worried about ensuring that your Qantas Points post, set a calendar appointment for 30 days time to remind you to check that your points have posted.

If they haven’t, contact Qantas to check on the status of the transaction. It can be handy to take a screenshot of the purchase to use in the event that you need to chase up the transaction.

How to get more points with Qantas Shopping

Aside from leveraging at times lucrative bonus Qantas Points offers from selected retailers, Qantas Shopping delivers even more ways to get the most out of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

Here are some tips and tricks to ensure you’re maximising your points-earning potential with Qantas Shopping.

Points Prompter — would you like points with that?

It can be tricky to keep track of which retailers are part of Qantas Shopping, but befriending the Points-Prompter could see you say goodbye to the days of shopping online without realising your purchase could have earned you some hefty Qantas Points.

A handy (and free) tool for savvy Qantas Shopping customers, the Points-Prompter ensures you never miss a deal by highlighting where bonus Qantas Points are available while you’re shopping online. Some Qantas Shopping deals are simply unmissable after all!

You can even curate a list of your go-to brands and the Points-Prompter will notify you when there are bonus points on offer.

Plus, the Points-Prompter allows you to compare points rates in your Google search results to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

The Points-Prompter plug-in is currently available on desktop and can be installed on Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Head to the Points-Prompter page to install the plug-in on your chosen browser.

Bear in mind that not all stores across the Qantas Shopping platform have opted into the Points-Prompter feature. You can view retailers, such as Apple, which are not supported here.

For all the pros, there are a few cons to the Qantas Shopping Points-Prompter feature including some privacy concerns. Here’s what to look out for:

Qantas Shopping: Here’s what you need to know

While earning points through Qantas Shopping is a fairly straightforward process, there are a few strategies to keep in mind to ensure you are getting the best value, and if you do decide to purchase via the Qantas Shopping portal, that you see those Qantas Points arrive in your account with ease.

Tracking online Qantas Shopping purchases

Your purchase must be tracked by Qantas Shopping in order for you to be credited with your Qantas Frequent Flyer points. As mentioned above, you need to ensure that you have your cookies enabled before you shop. More information about enabling cookies can be found here.

It’s also important to stress that you must visit the Qantas Shopping portal first and only then click through to the retailer site. If you visit the retailer’s online site directly, or navigate away from the Qantas Online Mall website and come back to it, you will not earn Qantas Points on your purchase.

Restricted purchases

Do note that some retailers may restrict some types of purchases (i.e. gift cards) from eligibility for the bonus points. You’ll find each online store’s full terms and conditions linked to the Qantas Shopping portal.

Qantas Shopping vs Qantas Frequent Flyer store

Qantas Shopping operates separately from the Qantas Frequent Flyer store, also known as the Rewards Store.

The Rewards Store is where you can redeem Qantas Points for goods from over 500 brands. However, unlike with Qantas Shopping, you must complete your purchase directly from the Qantas Frequent Flyer store website and spend at least 2,000 Qantas Points on each product.

While redeeming Qantas Points for products doesn’t usually offer a compelling value proposition, a points plus pay option allows for frequent flyers to pay with the minimum 2,000 Qantas Points and cover the rest with cash.

Example: Take the Dyson V8 Origin vacuum. Generally, we’d value Qantas Points at 1 cent or above. The vacuum is available for 104,170 Qantas Points on the Rewards Store, meaning the effective purchase price is at least $1,041. Since the same product can be purchased on MyDeal.com.au for $595, the value on offer here is questionable.

For context, 100,000 Qantas Points could easily get up to 18 Business Class upgrades on short domestic flights! Oftentimes frequent flyers can upgrade their Qantas Flight from Economy to Business for 5,400 Qantas Points.

Cashback website considerations

Purchasing via the Qantas Online Shopping portal could make sense, however cashback sites usually come out ahead. Websites like Cashrewards offer consumers a refund of a percentage of their purchase by using their portal.

It’s similar to Qantas Shopping, but rewards consumers with money instead of Qantas Points. From time to time, you may also find better purchasing options through deal aggregator sites like OzBargain.

Unfortunately, seeing as both these rewards use the last click-through to track a transaction, members can’t double-dip with both Qantas Points and cashback. The last click will determine what you get, so it’s best to choose what reward suits you here.

Note that some retailers that are affiliated with Qantas Shopping are also affiliated with a cashback site (usually Cashrewards). Where this is the case, consider how much the cashback rebate vs the Qantas Points are worth to you, and make your decision accordingly.

Qantas Shopping vs Qantas Marketplace

Qantas Loyalty recently launched Qantas Marketplace, a brand new online shopping experience, which offers frequent flyer members an improved way to earn and redeem Qantas Points on purchases.

So what’s the difference between Qantas Shopping and Qantas Marketplace?

In terms of  earning Qantas Points, Qantas Marketplace presents a new opportunity for frequent flyers seeking to indulge in a spot of retail therapy, with a generous serving of Qantas Points on the table.

There’s potential to stack bonus point offers with the standard Qantas Points earn rate on cash purchases, plus any bonus points awarded to Points Club members.

Qantas Shopping, on the other hand, essentially functions as a cashback site, where frequent flyers can continue to earn Qantas Points when shopping at more than 450 online retailers.

However, there’s no ability to ‘double dip’ on benefits from both sites for a single transaction.

Rather, shoppers will need to make a decision on which site they will use to start and complete their purchase journey.

Conclusion

The Qantas Shopping portal can help to boost your Qantas Points balance fast. It’s easy and free to use and can be particularly lucrative during bonus point offer periods.

This makes it a great way to ensure you’re maximising your points-earning opportunities and getting the most out of your frequent flyer membership. Plus, the Points-Prompter makes it easier than ever to track current deals.

If you’re planning to shop online at a specific retailer anyway, it can sometimes make sense to purchase via Qantas Shopping. That said, using a cashback site can often deliver greater value, so you should always carry out research before you shop.
