What are the benefits of Qantas Green tier?

First and foremost, Qantas Frequent Flyers who qualify for Green tier can unlock one of these three compelling benefits. There’s a choice of:

• 50 bonus Status Credits,
• 10,000 bonus Qantas Points, or
• opting for Qantas to offset three tonnes of carbon on your behalf

For Qantas Frequent Flyer members looking to attain or retain status, racking up a side of 50 bonus Status Credits is likely to hold appeal. On the other hand, 10,000 bonus Qantas Points might make sense for a member wanting to boost their frequent flyer balance.

Whichever reward you choose, achieving Qantas Green tier can help frequent flyers chase a goal, with the added ‘feel good’ benefit of doing something for the planet – especially for those who prefer to pay their bonus reward forward.

Plus, when carrying out qualifying activities via spend, it’s worth noting that additional bonus Qantas Points are also up for grabs when making sustainable purchases via Qantas Wine, Qantas Hotels, Qantas Shopping and Qantas Marketplace.

How to unlock Qantas Green tier fast

Qantas Green tier sits alongside the Qantas Frequent Flyer elite membership levels.

To secure Qantas Green status, members will need to complete five out of six specific activities during a membership year. The activities vary in difficulty, but are all relatively achievable for those with their sights set on becoming a certified Qantas ‘greenie’.

From choosing to offsetting your flight to sipping sustainable wine, here are the six ways to achieve green and unlock your bonus reward fast:

1. Offset your air travel

This sounds more complicated than it actually is. Qantas Frequent Flyers can easily check this activity off by opting to offset carbon for well under $5AUD on domestic flights.

Offsetting a flight from Sydney to Melbourne for example, cost me less than a dollar.

You’ll only need to offset carbon emissions from at least one flight, though there’s the ongoing benefit of earning 10 Qantas Points per dollar spent on further offsets.

To take advantage of this Qantas Green tier qualification activity, the flight must be booked on the Qantas Website. It is possible to offset already booked flights through ‘Manage My Booking’.

Note that offsetting Qantas partner airline flights doesn’t count here.

2. Offset your home or car

You can tick this off by either offsetting your home and car or purchasing eligible Solargain products.

Offsetting your home and car will depend on where you live and how many people you live with. Take a two-person household in NSW with two cars, for example. This would cost $170 AUD to offset, however someone living alone in NSW without a car would pay $65.

Similar to offsetting a flight, members will earn 10 Qantas Points per dollar spent on house and car carbon offset packages.

Purchasing Solargain products (exclusions apply) will count towards achieving Green tier status and earn Qantas Points. There are also 500 Qantas Points up for grabs for service and maintenance.

While it wouldn’t necessarily be wise to purchase solar panels purely to qualify for Qantas Green, it could be worthwhile if it’s something you plan to do anyway.

3. Mak a sustainable purchase

To fulfil this requirement, members will need to make their shopping more climate positive by completing at least one out of the following three activities:

• purchase sustainable wine from Qantas Wine
• opt for a carbon-neutral Qantas Wine delivery
• opt for a carbon-neutral Qantas Marketplace delivery

Qantas works closely with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia to curate a generous selection of mindfully produced wines. Qantas Green tier members can benefit from earning 250 bonus Qantas Points for each eco-friendly case purchase.

Adding carbon-neutral delivery only costs $1. Plus, buying from Qantas Wine can be a good way to earn a healthy surge of up to 20,000 bonus points.

Redeeming Qantas Points for goods via the Rewards Store doesn’t usually make sense, due to a typically poor-value use of points.

4. Make a donation to either OzHarvest or UNICEF

Qantas Frequent Flyer members could previously nab a leaf by completing a quiz on the Qantas Wellbeing App. However Qantas have now swapped this option out (presumably after many reports of the quiz not working) for a donation under the ‘give back’ category.

You’ll be awarded one leaf by donating at least 3,200 Qantas Points ($25) to either OzHarvest or UNICEF.

5. Make a donation to sustainability-focussed charities

To qualify for this activity, simply use Qantas Points to reduce your impact by making a donation to at one of two sustainability-focused charities:

• Great Barrier Reef Foundation
• Kimberley Land Council

Here’s the catch: The minimum donation is also 3,200 Qantas Points (for a $25 donation), so this is very much a case of spending Qantas Points (for good) to make them as a Green tier member.

6. Book a ‘green’ property via Qantas Hotels

The second ‘activity’ requires you to book a green hotel through Qantas Hotels for one night or more.

While a minimum stay of just one night could be a good excuse to get away, it’s worth knowing that eco-accredited hotels are typically on the more expensive side. This means the cost of your stay could outweigh the benefits of reaching Green tier.

Qantas Hotels vouchers count when qualifying for Green tier, so it could be a good idea to use a voucher toward booking a green hotel.

Other benefits of Qantas Green tier

Beyond the ability to unlock bonus Qantas Points or status credits, Qantas ‘greenies’ will benefit from the following perks:

Recognition on digital platforms: Green Tier members will receive a green digital Qantas Frequent Flyer card within the Qantas app, along with status recognition on other digital platforms.

Exclusive event invites: From time to time, Qantas runs exclusive events for Green Tier members. The focus here is on “sustainability events and experiences”.

Bonus Qantas Points: Green Tier members can unlock bonus Qantas Points when shopping sustainable products and experiences. This includes earning 150 points for every night they stay at an eco-accredited hotel booked via Qantas Hotels, and 250 bonus points for every case of six eco-wines purchased through Qantas Wine.
