It’s back: Score an easy 60,000 Qantas Points with Optus

NOTE: This offer has now expired.

Optus and Qantas are bringing back a popular promotion, unlocking the ability for savvy frequent flyers to earn a pile of 60,000 Qantas Points for just $396.

How the promotion works

To be eligible to receive the 60,000 bonus Qantas Points, Qantas Frequent Flyers must sign up for a $99 200GB Plan via the dedicated Optus promotion page located here. The offer is available for five days only, until 5 September 2022.

Note that a credit check may apply – you should check with Optus for further information.

Once your order is complete, Optus will send your physical SIM by courier within 1-5 business days. As a “SIM Only” plan, there’s no lock in contract, with the ability to cancel at any time.

Note that Optus customers who previously took up this offer in July 2022 aren’t eligible to receive the bonus points under this new promotion.

How to earn the maximum 60,000 Qantas Points

Optus states that the bonus Qantas Points affiliated with the $99 Qantas Promo Plan will be awarded as a “one-time point allotment”. To be eligible to receive the points, you must stay connected for 3 months from the service activation date.

It’s important to note that customers who sign up to the $99 Qantas Promo Plan and change or cancel their plan before the bonus points are awarded will forfeit their points. So, given the bonus points will be credited up to 7 days after the 3 month anniversary, it will most likely be necessary to pay for four months of usage in order to qualify for the 60,000 Qantas Points.

This effectively results in a maximum outlay of $396 to earn 60,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer Points.

Is this deal worth taking up?

We’d conservatively value Qantas Points at 1.7 per piece (of course, you can extract much higher value from premium redemptions), with 60,000 Qantas Points worth the equivalent of at least $1020. Therefore, the ability to pick up 60,000 Qantas Points for an outlay of just $396 is a pretty solid deal.

This promotion is likely to appeal to Qantas Frequent Flyer members who aren’t interested in taking up a Qantas-linked credit card. It’s also a much cheaper way of obtaining Qantas Points than if you were to purchase them direct from Qantas. When using the ‘top up’ purchase function on the Qantas website, 60,000 Qantas Points can be purchased for the eye-watering fee of $1,694 AUD, with no side benefits!

And, while Qantas Wine has in the past offered easy access to lucrative bonus point offers, in recent weeks these offers seem to have been scaled back. At the time of writing, the most lucrative offer we can find is 10,000 bonus Qantas Points on a $294 mixed dozen. It would therefore be necessary to outlay $1,764 to obtain 60,000 Qantas Points in this way.

Of course, in taking up this deal, you’ll also obtain the benefits of the service you’re paying for – namely, a pay-as-you-go SIM card loaded with 200GB of data each month from Optus for as long as the service remains active.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the 60,000 bonus Qantas Points earned from this deal will count towards Points Club qualification, the Qantas-aligned loyalty program designed to reward frequent flyers who earn piles of points from the couch.

To get this offer, new customers must sign up by 5th September 2022 via this page.

Just to add that it appears you would need to stay connected with Optus for a lot longer than 3 months to get these points. From the Qantas website it says the following about these offers with Optus; “Qantas Points will be earned in instalments of 5,000 points at the end of every third month from your service activation date if you stay continuously connected, up to the maximum total of bonus points offered on your plan.” For 60,000 points this would mean 3 months x 12 instalments x 5000 points = 36 months, or 36 x$99 = $3564
