Qantas has announced a new status extension initiative, providing Silver, Gold or Platinum or Platinum One frequent flyers with an additional 12 months or membership with just a single flight.
How the 12 month Qantas Frequent Flyer status rollover works
Australian and New Zealand Qantas Frequent Flyer members who are unable to achieve the Status Credits needed to retain their status will receive a 12-month status extension when they make at least one new eligible booking before the end of their current Membership Year.
Additionally, Qantas will rollover accrued Status Credits for eligible members up to a maximum amount, from their eligible Membership Year to help kick-start their new Membership Year.
Who is eligible for the Status Extension?
Qantas will extend the status for Qantas Frequent Flyer members who reside in Australia or New Zealand who:
- hold Platinum One, Platinum, Gold or Silver status and have not been able to earn the required Status Credits to retain their status;
- have a status end date between 31 March 2021 and 31 December 2021 (inclusive); and
- have made a new booking to travel on at least one eligible flight. The booking creation date must be between 23 November 2020 and before the member’s current status end date of between 31 March and 31 December 2021. The flight must be booked to travel before 31 December 2021.
Members who have received complimentary Gold status, or complimentary Platinum from a Platinum One member and those on Status Hold are eligible to have their status extended if they meet the above criteria.
Which flights are eligible for Status Extension?
To be eligible for status extension, you need to book, pay and have the ticket issued on at least one of the following:
- Any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number, or
- Any Qantas Points earning Jetstar international booking with a JQ flight number including Jetstar flights within New Zealand (JQ), Jetstar Japan (GK) and Jetstar Asia (3K) flights. Jetstar domestic flights within Australia are ineligible.
For the flight to be eligible and contribute towards the Status Extension, the booking must be in the name of the Qantas Frequent Flyer member irrespective of who’s paying for the ticket. Members must ensure their Qantas Frequent Flyer Membership number is added to the booking for it to be eligible.
If you cancel your booking, you will not be eligible for the status extension unless you make another eligible booking.
How can I pay for the new booking?
Eligible bookings can be paid with cash, Qantas TravelPass, Qantas Flight Credit, or with Qantas Points (via a Classic Flight Reward or Points Plus Pay).

What about QANTAS Club members, I renewed and paid for two years membership back in February, and have only been able use it for one flight. Has my membership been extended for a year, hardly seems fair if it hasn’t, noting that you are extending time for FF.
I’m a little annoyed at Qantas. Prior to covid hitting, I was enrolled into their status challenge (as a Virgin platinum member). They told me I needed to achieve a certain number of SCs by a certain date, and I had achieved 90% of what I needed, with another three flights already booked and paid for that would have well and truly met and exceeded the number of SCs I needed to be matched as a Qantas gold FF. Then covid struck, they cancelled my flights, removing any possibility of achieving the status match, and when I questioned it was basically told “bad luck”. And you can only apply for a status challenge once, so they tell me I can’t even reapply later. If that’s how Qantas customer service works, I may be better off without them.
It looks as if I’m going to miss out on retaining my gold status credits as my membership expires this month and my flight to Canberra is on 11th Dec!
Hi there, sorry.. I’m unclear. My gold membership finishes January 2021. I’m happy to book another flight but it looks as though I don’t qualify for the period entitlements. Is this correct please? Also, I had enough flights this year to move me onto platinum. I’m guessing qantas won’t be honoring those despite them canceling all of my flights?
Thanks so much
Thanks Adele. How is ones membership impacted if your anniversary is before 31 March ie. 31 January 2021 – does your status level automatically roll over for another 12 months too?
Check your status page on Qantas, because you might have already been extended. I’m in a similar situation, and my status now resets at the end of February 2022 instead of the end of Feb 2021.
Hello, for the first time my husband and I almost had enough status credits to reach Silver, we needed one more flight which we would have done. Then it expired during COVID-19, will you be honouring this situation also. As we travel to Darwin in Dec?
Hi Kate, as this is a status retain promotion, unfortunately only Platinum One, Platinum, Gold or Silver status members are eligible to benefit.
This is amazing ! So if I have already had a status extension now expiring Dec2021, as long as I comply with the new status extension requirements, I could maintain my status until Dec2022! Awesome 👏 thank you Qantas!
Great news, I am a frequent flyer who has not been able to travel in 2020 and was concerned with losing all my earned status points.
Nice one Qantas
No help if your status year ends 28 Feb 2021 , yes I think there is a status bonus but there is
still no where to fly to get the status credits requred
Check your status page on Qantas. The system should show that you’ve met the requirements to retain your current status, even if you haven’t flown this year. You might see he same expiry date for your status credits, but the target will be to reach the next level above you, not to retain your current status.
This doesn’t help hardly anyone. Resident Australians can fly to various cities within Australia to get their 4 eligible flights so it doesn’t do a great deal for them but all the QFFs who live overseas cannot get anywhere near a Qantas plane. I was desperate to hold on to my gold status but obviously Qantas don’t respect their overseas members loyalty so I am sure they will lose many members including me.
Hi Helen, in good news, Qantas has separately announced plans to rollover status for overseas members, with no flight qualification requirements required. We’ll be putting up an article about this shortly.
