First Suites return as Singapore Airlines A380 touches down in Melbourne

It’s been almost three and a half years in the making…

It’s back! The Singapore Airlines A380s arrived back in Melbourne yesterday morning, touching down in the Victorian capital for the first time since January 2020.

Singapore’s Boeing 777s had been flying the Singapore-Melbourne route, with the return of the flagship Airbus A380 now signaling a return to pre-pandemic travel.

With more than 200 seats than the 777s, and of course Singapore’s beloved First Suites, the A380s give Australian-based travellers a unique opportunity to sample one of the best first class products in the sky.

Flight schedule

Travellers heading to or from Sydney and Melbourne now have better chances of locking in an aspirational award seat on the following services:

Melbourne

The flagship superjumbo will replace the Boeing 777 on both daily services. Flights SQ228 and SQ237 will each depart daily until 28 October 2023.

Sydney

Today marks Sydney seeing a second daily A380 visit, with the superjumbo replacing the current A350-900 on flights SQ221 and SQ232.

Singapore First Suites award availability

At the time of writing, there are a handful of opportunities to score a redemption in Singapore’s popular First Suite across the next couple of months, with limited availability showing for May and June.

However, you’d be looking at 155,000 KrisFlyer miles or 240,250 Velocity Points (plus carrier charges) as there are no Saver awards left for these months.

Looking ahead to July and August through to October, there appears to be much more Advantage availability, but again, unfortunately, Saver awards are only showing for 777 flights at the time of writing:

Singapore Airlines’ superjumbo also houses 78 comfortable business class seats, making it much easier to fly to Asia in comfort using KrisFlyer miles.

There is currently good availability showing for business class, with the above award flight still bookable in the school holidays on 25 July 2023:

You’ll need 68,500 KrisFlyer Miles (plus carrier charges) to lock in a business award, with plenty of Saver availability on the A380.

Unfortunately, there’s no business class offers featured in this month’s Spontaneous Escapes offers, but there will likely be more opportunities to pick up a discount with any future promotions.

Summing up

Singapore Airlines has increased A380 flights to Sydney, while bringing the flagship aircraft back to Melbourne for the first time in over three years.

The boost will see more premium award seat availability for frequent flyers itching to experience Singapore’s famous First Suite, meaning now may be a good time to put your KrisFlyer miles to work.
