Qatar Airways launches double Qpoints (status credits) promotion

Good news Privilege Club members, retaining or upgrading your status tier just got a whole lot easier this year.

Qatar Airways has launched a double Qpoints promotion and reduced status tier retention requirements, making it easier than ever for Privilege Club members to access elite perks.

Operating in a similar way to Qantas and Velocity status credits, Qpoints is the currency used to determine status level within Qatar’s frequent flyer program.

Under the promotion, all Privilege Club members can take advantage of the double Qpoints offer – bringing elite oneworld status (and associated Qantas First Lounge access) within reach.

Plus, as an additional sweetener, savvy travellers who secured a status match during Covid can continue to enjoy tier benefits with a reduced number of Qpoints required.

Here’s what to know about this Qatar Airways promotion.

Double Qpoints offer

All members of Qatar Airways Privilege Club are able to take advantage of the double Qpoints offer.

The number of Qpoints needed to upgrade to the three levels of elite status is outlined in the table below:

To earn double Qpoints, simply book a Qatar-operated flight before 31 March 2023 for travel until 30 June 2023. You’ll need to quote your Privilege Club membership number to earn 2X Qpoints on your flight.

Note that existing flights booked prior to this offer will not be eligible for the promotional bonus if reissued during the offer period. Codeshare flights also don’t qualify.

How many Qpoints will I earn?

Bonus Qpoints are calculated based on the combination of booking date, flight date, cabin and fare purchased.

Qatar has a handy online calculator that allows you to work out how many Qpoints and Avios you’ll earn on any Qatar marketed flight.

For example, flying business elite from Sydney to Paris in business class would normally earn 272 Qpoints in Business Elite. Under the promotion, the number of Qpoints that are earned would be doubled to 544 – excluding flight sector requirements, that’s enough for an existing Platinum member to retain status for 12 months, and close to the number of Qpoints needed to upgrade to Platinum.

How many Qpoints do I need: Reduced threshold for tier retention

Beyond double Qpoints, Platinum, Gold and Silver Privilege Club members can also leverage a reduced number of Qpoints needed to retain their membership tier. The thresholds for a 12-month retention are as follows:

TiersStandard requirementsOffer period
Platinum540400
Gold270200
Silver135100

Want to access tier benefits for even longer? The requirements have been reduced here, too, with the table below outlining the standard and offer thresholds for a 24-month retention period.

TiersStandard requirementsOffer period
Platinum1080800
Gold540400
Silver270200

As a result, a Platinum member with a tier expiry in February 2023 will require just 400 Qpoints to retain their tier for 12 months, or 800 Qpoints to retain for 24 months.

Buy discounted Qpoints for less

For a limited time, Privilege Club members can also purchase Qpoints at a discounted rate.

We don’t often see airlines offer the ability to purchase tier miles or credits. It’s worth bearing in mind that even at a discount, the cost per QPoint under this promotion ($15 USD) remains very high. However, this offer could be worth considering if you find yourself just short of the number of Qpoints needed to attain or retain your elite status.

Before purchasing any Qpoints, we would suggest working out the value you would get from locking in another 12-24 months of tier benefits.

Summary

Qatar’s limited time double Qpoints promotion makes it twice as easy to earn or retain elite benefits with Qatar Airways Privilege Club. Plus, with reduced tier retention thresholds on offer, there’s even more reason to celebrate if you are an existing Silver, Gold or Platinum Privilege Club member.

You’ve got just over two months to book your flights to take advantage of double Qpoints – where will you fly?
