More Reward Seats! Qantas resumes non-stop flights between Melbourne and Tokyo

Good news for Qantas Frequent Flyers who now have another way to use Qantas Points to jet straight to Tokyo.

The Flying Kangaroo has resumed flights from Melbourne to Tokyo, with an Airbus A330 aircraft operating a direct service four times a week.

We’re seeing plenty of award availability over the coming months in both business and economy cabins, meaning this newly revitalised route has the potential to be a real win for Qantas Frequent Flyers.

The details

The new service will land at Haneda Airport, rather than Tokyo Narita International Airport as it did in the past – another win for travellers who won’t have as far to venture into town.

The flights are expected to save travellers more than an hour’s commute into the city and complement Qantas’ already resumed daily flights from Sydney to Haneda.

Qantas is also making improvements for customers flying from Haneda Airport. Eligible passengers are now able to access the Priority Lane at the airport’s security checkpoint, as well as Japan Airlines’ first class and Sakura business class lounges.

Melbourne to Tokyo Haneda: How to book

The new flights can now be booked on qantas.com or through travel agents. Qantas is currently running a Japan Red Tail Sale to celebrate the return of direct Melbourne to Tokyo flights.

Right now, we’re seeing good availability of economy award seats over the following months, with April and May still easily bookable.

An economy Classic Flight Reward will cost 31,500 Qantas Points one way (plus $145 in carrier charges).

However, it’s business class that we’re truly excited about. A one way business Classic Flight Reward seat comes in at just 82,000 Qantas Points (plus $196 in carrier charges).

We’ve spotted excellent availability from June onwards, with July through September still showing almost full availability. Premium flights into Japan are especially popular, so we suggest jumping on these seats sooner rather than later!

The flight schedule

Flight QF79 will take off from Melbourne weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, leaving at 10:30am before arriving at Haneda Airport at 8pm local time.

On the return leg, travellers will farewell Haneda Airport at 9:30pm each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, before touching down in Melbourne at 8:35am the next morning.

The overnight return service makes for a good opportunity to enjoy business class spoils.

The Qantas A330 business cabin features 28 lie-flat seats arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, ideal for solo travellers or those flying in a pair.

With a flight time over 10 hours, passengers will also be able to enjoy the Red Roo’s newly refreshed menu, with business class offerings including seared snapper with black bean sauce and seasonal greens.

Summing up

Qantas became the first airline to fly non-stop between Melbourne and Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport when the service first launched in late 2019.

Now relaunched, the direct route offers Qantas Frequent Flyers more opportunities to lock in Tokyo for their next Classic Flight Reward.
