Frequent flyer members from Australian airline programs can leverage their existing status to enjoy a three month ‘Discover Gold’ trial membership in Virgin Australia’s Velocity loyalty program.
Now open for registration through to 15 September 2023, this latest Velocity status match promotion is clearly aimed at Qantas Frequent Flyer loyalists.

What benefits does the Discover Gold trial unlock?
With a Discover Gold membership, eligible frequent flyers will obtain instant access to a range of valuable perks, designed to make travel more comfortable on the ground and in the air. The main benefits on offer are:
- Priority check-in, priority screening and priority boarding
- Access to Virgin Australia’s network of domestic Lounges
- Additional baggage allowance (excluding Lite fares),
Who is eligible?
Travellers who hold Gold or above status with another Australian airline program (read: Qantas Frequent Flyer) are in line to snap up this elevated status challenge, which comes with the ability to unlock full Velocity Gold membership for a further 12 months.
To register for this promotion, you’ll need to be a Velocity Frequent Flyer member and you must not have not held Silver, Gold or Platinum Status with Velocity since April 2020.
How to register
If you’re eligible for the Discover Gold fast track, simply follow the steps below:
- Send an email to Virgin Australia via this page by 15 September 2023 with your full name, Velocity membership number, and a photograph of your other Australian airline frequent flyer membership card indicating the equivalent of Velocity Gold status or higher. Make sure that you use the email address registered with your Velocity membership when emailing your status match application.
- Velocity will take a look at your details and if you’re eligible, upgrade you into a 3-month Velocity Discover Gold trial.
Velocity states that it may take up to 6 weeks to receive your upgrade into your Discover Gold trial. Note that applications will be processed in the order received and Velocity is unable to accommodate requests from travellers to move the trial start date.
How to unlock a further year of full Velocity Gold benefits
To gain full Velocity Gold membership for a further 12 months after the three-month trial, travellers simply need to earn 80 Status Credits and fly 1 Eligible Sector during your Velocity Discover Gold trial period.
An Eligible Sector is any flight that begins with a VA flight number and excludes Reward Seats.
Full Gold membership provides access to all the perks provided for the Discover Gold trial, with the added inclusions of:
- Guaranteed economy reward seats for an annual family trip
- Complimentary partner memberships (hotel and car partners)
- Membership pause for parental leave
- Gold Premium luggage tags

I’m wondering if the 80 SC includes the number already accrued, or if it means ‘new’ SC during the 3 month period. It sounds like the latter, but I can’t find any definitive info.

Hi Stephen, our understanding is that you must earn ‘new’ SC in the 3 month period after your status fast track is registered.
If only they ever got back to me, tried ages ago through three different emails to the velocity program and just got run in circles. Whilst i agree Virgin is probably ahead in the quality stakes right now, their FF contact is atrocious.
