Travel starved Aussies can go back to the 90s with the launch of Qantas mystery flights from selected Australian cities
Qantas has today announced the latest in its series of highly popular concept flights, with plans to operate three domestic mystery flights. The flights will cater for travellers keen to enjoy unique travel experiences in Australia while international borders remain closed.
As a child in the 1990s, I have fond memories of embarking on a mystery flight for my birthday. It worked like this: You’d book your ticket, turn up at the airport, and be allocated seats on a scheduled flight to a ‘mystery’ destination. You’d spend the day at your leisure before flying home.
Qantas mystery flights: What’s included in 2021?
In 2021, Qantas has evolved the concept and will offer three dedicated Boeing 737 mystery flight experiences. The experience goes beyond a flight to include an entire day of activities in a mystery destination – so all passengers need to do is book and turn up at the airport. All destinations are outside major capital cities.
Experiences on the ground could include anything from a winemaking course in a premier Australian wine region to a gourmet lunch with musical entertainment on the shores of one of Australia’s tropical island wonders. As part of creating a unique on-board experience the flights will include some low-level scenic flybys of key landmarks en route (subject to weather conditions and air traffic control).
Customers will be provided with clues to ensure it is an appropriate outing for their areas of interest and to assist with whether to pack a snorkel or sneakers in their carry-on baggage.
Qantas mystery flight departure cities and dates
Qantas mystery flight experiences will depart from Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne to a destination within approximately two hours. Here’s what to expect:
Brisbane (Saturday 27 March 2021): Qantas says this mystery flight experience is perfect for those who love country hospitality, gourmet food, wine, and the great outdoors
Sydney (Sunday 18th April 2021): This experience is my pick. It involves a day in the tropics complete with long lunching on the beach
Melbourne (Saturday 1 May 2021): For the third and final mystery flight, Melbournites can jet off to the great outdoors for the day to sample gourmet food & wine and visit regional farmers markets
