Federal government to offer 800,000 half-price flights around Australia

Half-price flights will be on offer to holiday destinations around Australia

Australians will be able to snap up hundreds of thousands of half-price airfares as part of the Federal government’s $1.2 billion package for the domestic tourism industry.

800,000 flights will be on offer for travel between 13 regions that have been heavily impacted by a lack of international visitors. This includes:

  • Gold Coast
  • Cairns
  • Whitsundays/Mackay
  • Sunshine Coast
  • Lasseter and Alice Springs
  • Launceston
  • Devonport and Burnie
  • Broome
  • Avalon
  • Merimbula
  • Kangaroo Island

Flights will be available to book from airline websites, including Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin, from April 1.

Qantas expects to offer up to 32,000 fares per week to eligible destinations, stimulating travel demand and driving tourism spending for four months.

The $1.2 billion industry-wide package has a number of elements that, combined, will support the sector that has arguably been worst hit by the COVID crisis and related restrictions. It is the result of detailed discussions with government and business over several months.
