What is Tick Travel Insurance?
Tick Travel Insurance offers reliable and affordable travel insurance solutions to individuals, families, and groups. Known for its straightforward policies and competitive pricing, Tick specialises in comprehensive coverage that includes medical expenses, trip cancellations, baggage protection, and emergency assistance.
What makes Tick stand out? – It’s their four tiers of coverage – Basic, Budget, Standard, and Top – customers can select plans tailored to their specific needs and budgets.
Tick has picked up a number of awards over the years, including the 2025 Canstar Outstanding Value Award – Cruise Travel Insurance and the 2024 Canstar Outstanding Value Award – International Travel Insurance.
The Tick Travel Insurance privacy policy can be found here.
Tick Travel Insurance Cover Levels Explained
Basic is Tick’s cheapest policy. It includes unlimited overseas emergency medical cover, 24/7 emergency assistance and modest luggage cover, but no cancellation cover and no cover for phones, laptops or other valuables. It’s available to travellers aged 69 and under, for trips of up to 42 days, and doesn’t cover the Americas.
Budget adds cancellation cover of up to $5,000 and higher luggage limits, including some cover for phones and laptops. It’s available up to age 79, but like Basic, it doesn’t extend to the USA, Canada or Central and South America.
Standard is the first level that can cover pre-existing medical conditions (once declared and accepted) and travel to the Americas. It adds travel delay, delayed baggage, rental car excess, cutting your trip short and some COVID-19 benefits, and is available up to age 100.
Top includes everything in Standard with the highest limits, including up to $20,000 in cancellation cover, plus extras such as resuming your trip and pet care if you’re delayed getting home. It’s also available up to age 100.
All four levels include unlimited overseas medical cover and a $200 standard excess, and children under 18 travelling with a parent or grandparent are covered free. Limits change from time to time, so check the PDS before you buy.
Travel Insurance Guides for Popular Destinations
We've put together dedicated travel insurance guides for 5 of the most popular destinations for Australian travellers. Each one covers the medical costs, common claims and local risks that should shape the policy you choose before you go.

Is Tick Good for Seniors?
Tick can cover travellers up to age 100, but only on its Standard and Top policies. Basic is limited to travellers aged 69 and under, and Budget to those aged 79 and under. Standard and Top are also the only levels where pre-existing medical conditions can be assessed and added to your cover.
The bigger catch is trip length. From age 65, international trips are capped at 90 days (42 days for the Pacific), and travellers aged 80 and over heading to the Americas are limited to 35 days. If you’re planning a cruise, Tick’s cruise policy isn’t available over age 79.
For shorter trips, Tick’s Standard or Top cover is worth a quote. For longer trips, complex medical histories or cruises in your 80s, a specialist such as AllClear or Southern Cross may suit you better. See our guides to travel insurance for over 70s and travel insurance for over 80s for more options.
Is Tick Travel Insurance Worth It?
Travel insurance is always worth it. It’s just a matter of paying a fair price for what you need and nothing more. In the case of Tick, being able to choose from different tiers makes it particularly worthwhile.
- Simple tiers
- Cost-effective
- Pre-existing conditions considered (Standard and Top)
- Lowest tier is very basic
- Shorter trip limits from age 65
- Low personal liability and payouts per event

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get insurance from Tick Travel Insurance for existing medical conditions?
Not all policies cover this, but pre-existing medical conditions are considered in Standard and Top Cover in International policies.
Does Tick Travel Insurance provide 24/7 Emergency Assistance?
Yes, 24 hour emergency assistance is available.
Does a Tick Travel Insurance promo code work on all four policy tiers?
In most cases a Tick promo code applies across Basic, Budget, Standard and Top cover, but it’s always worth checking the specific terms of the code before purchasing as some promotions may be restricted to certain policy levels or trip types.
Is Tick Travel Insurance good value for a family travelling overseas?
Tick is a strong option for families given that children under 18 travel free when accompanied by an insured parent or guardian, which can make a meaningful difference to the overall cost of a family policy compared to insurers that charge per person.
Can I use Tick Travel Insurance for a cruise holiday?
Yes. Tick won the 2025 Canstar Outstanding Value Award for Cruise Travel Insurance in their very first year of offering cruise-specific cover, making it a credible and cost-effective option for Australians planning a cruise holiday.
What is the difference between Tick Travel Insurance Standard and Top cover?
Both Standard and Top cover include pre-existing medical condition consideration and 24/7 emergency assistance, but Top cover increases the limits on cancellation, baggage, and other key benefits – making it worth the extra cost for longer or more expensive trips where the stakes are higher.
How do I make a claim with Tick Travel Insurance?
Claims can be lodged through Tick’s online portal or by contacting their claims team directly. You’ll need supporting documentation such as receipts, medical reports, or a police report depending on the claim type – see our full guide to making a successful travel insurance claim for what to prepare before you start.
Does Tick Travel Insurance cover motorbikes?
Motorbike and moped cover depends on your policy tier and engine size – check the PDS for the specific limits before you ride overseas.
Can I buy Tick Travel Insurance after I’ve already left home?
No – like most Australian insurers, Tick requires your policy to be purchased before you depart. Cover can’t be backdated once you’re already travelling.
What is the maximum age for Tick Travel Insurance?
Up to 100 on Standard and Top cover. Basic is limited to travellers aged 69 and under, and Budget to 79 and under.
