ANZ Frequent Flyer Black: What’s to love?

With a huge 120,000 Qantas Points on the table, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is a top pick for Qantas lovers. And, with $275 back to your card, you’ll significantly offset the first year annual fee.

Throw in generous uncapped Qantas Points earning potential, access to Qantas Club privileges plus other travel perks, and it’s not hard to see how this card could take pride of place in your wallet for the long term.

Am I eligible to receive the 120k bonus Qantas Points?

To be eligible to receive the 120,000 bonus Qantas Points, you must not currently hold or have opened or closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer card in the past 12 months. If you currently hold or have held an ANZ Rewards card or another type of ANZ credit card in the past 12 months (such as the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures card), this does not preclude you from earning the bonus points on the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black.

To apply for this card, you must be 18 years of age or over and a permanent Australian resident or a non-permanent resident with more than 9 months remaining on your Visa.

Ok, so what are 120,000 bonus Qantas Points actually worth?

I personally use my Qantas Points for business and first class flights, and my goal is to extract at least 5 cents value or more from each Qantas Point. That being said, everyone’s redemption goals are different, so the perceived value of Qantas Points differs from person to person.

The fact is, even at a conservative ballpark valuation of 1 cent per point (as published by Choice earlier this year) 120,000 Qantas Points is worth the equivalent of $1,200 AUD. When you consider that you’ll get $275 back to your card in the first year (significantly offsetting the annual fee), with many other perks on offer, that’s an incredible value proposition.

    1. Hi Lisa, the bonus points will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. Qantas points don’t expire, provided you earn or redeem at least one point every 18 months.

  1. Hi, once I have spent the $4000 requirement, will I receive the 120k points and $275 cashback immediately? Also, do I get charge for requesting an additional card holder?

    1. Hi Damien, ANZ states that the bonus Qantas Points will be credited to your Qantas account and the $275 will be credited to your credit card account within three months of the eligible spend criteria being met. A $65 annual fee applies per supplementary card.

  2. If you meet the required spent criteria in the timeframe & after 3 months have passed for your bonus points to be paid…
Is it 120K points in one hit? Or is it points distributed over month to month? Example : 20K points over a 6 month period, equaling and eventual 120K points.

    1. Hi Graeme, yes, eligible new cardholders receive the 120k Qantas Points all in one hit. ANZ states that the bonus Qantas Points will be credited to your Qantas account and the $275 will be credited to your credit card account within three months of the eligible spend criteria being met.

    1. Hi Nick, in some circumstances it may do. However, we’d encourage you to look through the Insurance terms and conditions (linked in the post) to determine if the cover is right for you.

    1. Hi Shannon, ANZ doesn’t currently advertise a minimum income for this card. If you’d like to query this further, you’d be best placed to contact ANZ direct on 13 22 73.

      1. Hi Michelle, there is no monthly minimum spend you need to make on the card. However, new cardholders need to spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of approval to receive the 120,000 Qantas Points and $275 back.

  3. Hi,
    A couple of queries.
At what stage after the card is issued is the first annual fee of $425 due ?
Will the $275 rebate on the first year fee be paid immediately after the 3 months if spend criteria met ?
At what point can someone cancel the card ? Does this incur a fee if after the 3 months but before a full year ?
When will the 120,000 points be deposited into the cardholders qantas account ? After 3 months ?

    1. Hi Ben 1) The $425 annual fee is due within the first statement period. 2) The $275 cashback is credited to the eligible cardholder’s credit card account within three months of the eligible spend criteria being met. 3) You can choose to cancel the card at anytime with no fee to cancel after 3 months but before one full year has passed. However, if you cancel before you receive the 120,000 Qantas Points and/or $275 cashback, you will not be able to claim these once the card has been closed. 4) Upon meeting the eligibility and spend criteria, ANZ states that the bonus Qantas Points will be credited to the cardholder’s Qantas account within three months of the eligible spend criteria being met. I hope that helps. More information is available via the ANZ application form. Cheers, Adele

    2. Could you let me if the is any additional miles added for each year the card is kept? Or is it a one time credit of 120k miles on meeting the requirements? Thanks

      1. Hi David, there is only one bonus of 120,000 Qantas Points awarded to each paccount. Eligible supplementary cardholders would need to apply for their own card in order to receive the 120,000 Qantas Points for themselves.

  4. Hi my husband have a platinum credit card and I am an additional holder. The qantas frequent flyer membership is in his name. Can I apply for the credit card and the qantas points goes to his qantas membership?

    1. Hi Ellynne, as an additional cardholder, you won’t be precluded from the bonus points offer. However, when you meet the spend criteria, the bonus 120,000 Qantas Points can only be credited to the primary card holder’s Qantas Frequent Flyer account – not someone else’s. So they would need to go to your account, not your husband. If you are not yet a member, you can join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free as part of the application process. And, if you wish your husband to receive the points down the track, you could choose to family transfer the points to him once they are credited to your account.

  5. This looks like a great offer, however even with the lounge passes, the $425 annual fee is steep! Are there any ways to reduce this?

    1. IMO this is the best deal going for low annual fee and easy to meet spend criteria that’s all in one hit (not staggered over months or years like other banks). Don’t forget the cashback of $275 is credited to your account after you meet the minimum spend – so you’re essentially only paying $150 for 120k points in the first year. Yes, $425 is steep but you can cancel before the second annual fee is charged.

  6. Hi, does the 3 month, minimum spend of $4000, commence once approval has been given or at the time of application? How long does approval roughly take?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Gayle, the 3 month window starts from approval. The approval timeframe and process can vary and depends on your individual circumstances. While some applicants can be approved instantly, other prospective cardholders may be asked to upload documentation. ANZ typically processes any documentation quickly, and they state that you can expect to receive your card within 5 business days from approval being granted.

    1. Hi Kai, Historically, ANZ used to specify an income requirement for this card. However, we were instructed to remove it sometime back, so we are not aware of one currently being in place. If you’d like to query this further, you’d be best placed to contact ANZ direct on 13 22 73.

    1. Hi Anita, transactions which are not eligible to earn Qantas Points are: fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers and transactions for gambling or gaming purposes. ANZ doesn’t publish a list of what constitutes eligible spend. However, a full list of purchases which are NOT eligible to earn Rewards Points can be found in the ANZ Rewards Program T&Cs document which is available from the application form.

  7. Hi, I currently hold this card. If my wife is a supplementary card holder, can she sign up to this card to get the 120,000 bonus points for herself?

    1. Hi Terry. Yes, provided your wife has not held an ANZ Frequent Flyer Card in the past 12 months, then she is not precluded from receiving the 120,000 bonus Qantas Points.

  8. How quickly can I get this card? I have a purchase to make this week of $1400 that I could use for the $4000 spend

    1. Hi Samantha, ANZ states that it can take 5 business days for the card to be sent out once final approval is granted. The timeline for receiving the card could depend on where you live. Based on this, it’s unlikely that you’d be able to place this week’s payment on the card, unfortunately.

  9. Hello – can I undertake a balance transfer if I apply for this card and how long would I have to pay off this balance?
