Hurry: Qantas will end COVID reward booking flexibility tonight

Flexible Classic Flight Rewards are about to be a thing of the past; take advantage of fee-free changes and cancellations while you can.

Qantas Frequent Flyers have just one more day to leverage fee-free changes and cancellations on Classic Flight Reward bookings.

The national carrier’s Flexible Classic Flight Rewards policy will come to an end tonight, Friday 30 September 2022.

Digging into the Flexible Classic Flight Rewards policy

Qantas initially introduced Flexible Classic Flight Rewards as part of its Fly Flexible policy to waive change and cancellation fees in May 2020.

Under the policy, customers who book an Australian domestic Classic Flight Reward before 30 September can change or cancel their booking without incurring any fees until 30 September 2022.

Additionally, those who book a Trans-Tasman or International Classic Flight Reward before the policy ends on 30 September can take advantage of fee-free changes or cancelation until 31 December 2022.

As well as waiving cancellation fees, Qantas will refund all Qantas Points, taxes, fees and carrier charges used as part of the cancelled Classic Flight Reward booking.

Qantas Flexible Classic Flight Rewards policy

Why take advantage of the Flexible Classic Flight Rewards policy?

The policy has offered customers a degree of certainty and flexibility on Classic Flight Reward bookings in what have been unprecedently turbulent times.

The freedom to change or cancel reward bookings without the need to pay fees or provide a reason has somewhat encouraged frequent flyers to feel confident in booking travel amidst isolation requirements, lockdowns, and border closures.

While the policy has been extended numerous times – most recently in June this year – we suspect this will be the end of fee-free changes and cancellations for the foreseeable future.

That said, Qantas customers can still take advantage of the carrier’s Fly Flexible options by purchasing flight flexibility with a Saver or Flex fare.

While Saver fares offer limited ticket flexibility (with the option to change flights for a fee), higher-cost Flex fares allow flyers to change travel dates any number of times.

With flight cancellations and uncertainty still rife in aviation space, the absence of Qantas’ Flexible Classic Flight Rewards policy may mean there is some extra consideration required upon booking Classic Rewards.

Are you planning to take advantage of the final day of Qantas’ Flexible Classic Flight Rewards?

I was just in London and we had booked a Classic Flight Reward flight for our daughter. Yes, you can change the dates without penalty ‘if another Classic flight reward date is available’. Good luck with that! We tried to move her flight back a month and they said there was nothing available for almost a year!!! In fact it is not a flexible policy because there are not enough Classic Flight Reward seats to ever make it possible.
