Will your phone work in Australia?
Australia’s 3G networks have been switched off. That has two practical effects for visitors:
- Data works on any eSIM-compatible 4G or 5G phone. A travel eSIM only needs a mobile data connection, so most recent phones are fine.
- Normal phone calls need 4G calling (VoLTE). If you plan to roam on your home SIM for calls, check with your home carrier that VoLTE roaming works in Australia. Some overseas phones have been blocked from Australian networks because they can’t make emergency calls over 4G.
