Seattle-based Alaska Airlines has announced its intention to join the oneworld alliance as a full member by summer 2021. This is exciting news, and it will bring a myriad of points earning and burning opportunities for Qantas Frequent Flyers.
Once approved, oneworld membership will allow Alaska Mileage Plan loyalty members to earn and redeem Mileage Plan miles through oneworld member airlines’ extensive global network.
Reciprocal benefits will apply
Reciprocal benefits will apply for Oneworld Emerald and Sapphire elites, with the partnership unlocking access to Alaska’s lounges and associated perks based on status.
The addition of Alaska Airlines is a big coup for oneworld. It follows a recent announcement that Royal Air Maroc will be joining the oneworld alliance later this year, while high-profile partner LATAM will exit in just a few months time.
Time will tell how the upcoming alliance might impact on Alaska’s award chart, considered by many to offer some of the most generous redemption rates around.
We can expect to see more information about the alliance to be released over the next few months.

Their aircraft are always dirty, service abysmal and I’ve only ever flown them in first. Would hate to see economy. Hardly worth celebrating.
