Frequent Flyers used more than 1.2 billion Qantas Points to book flights in just 48 hours, after Qantas on Monday extended its commitment to provide up to 50 per cent more Classic Reward seats.
The announcements saw a huge surge of members logging in to their frequent flyer accounts on Monday, with temporary system outages causing frustration.
A number of records have been broken including the highest number of points ever used for flights in a single day in the program’s 35-year history and the most international classic reward seats ever booked in premium cabins (First, Business and Premium Economy) in a single day.
The most popular international destinations frequent flyers booked included Los Angeles, London, Singapore, Tokyo and Bangkok. One member used 1.5 million points for a trip around the world that included stops in Bengaluru, London, and San Francisco.
The additional reward seats were added as part of Qantas’ surprise ‘sorry’ package. The initiative is intended to apologise for the brand’s recent mishandling of countless flights and baggage mishaps, while simultaneously saying ‘thank you’ for sticking around.
The first tranche of additional seats was released at midday on Monday across international and domestic flights. Hundreds of thousands of frequent flyers have already registered to accept the offer of $50 towards a return flight.
