Cairns Hotel Deals: Wet Season Rates & Where to Stay

Cairns hotel prices follow the weather and the festival calendar more than anything else. The dry season from about June to August is the busiest and priciest stretch, with Ironman, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and the Cairns Festival packed into it, while the wet season is the cheapest time to visit. Whether you’re comparing Cairns hotel deals for a city-centre base or hotel deals Cairns offers up the coast at Palm Cove, the lowest headline rate isn’t always the best value. Here’s what moves the price, where to stay, and how Accor and Marriott Bonvoy fit in, both with free loyalty programs.

Where to Stay in and around Cairns, and Which Hotel Groups Are There

Cairns hotels sit in three clusters. The city centre and Esplanade is the base for Great Barrier Reef tours, with the Reef Fleet Terminal, the Esplanade lagoon and the Cruise Liner Terminal close by. Palm Cove is a beachfront village about 20 kilometres north, and Port Douglas, further north again, has Four Mile Beach. Cairns is unusual for hotel groups: Accor has a large presence, Marriott has a single resort in Port Douglas, and IHG doesn’t currently have a hotel in Cairns. If you’re comparing Cairns CBD hotel deals, check how close each hotel is to the Reef Fleet Terminal and the Esplanade, because that’s what matters on a reef-tour trip.

Here is where Marriott Bonvoy and Accor have hotels in and around Cairns, by area:

AreaMarriott and Accor hotels
Cairns city centre and EsplanadeAccor: Pullman Cairns International, The Reef Hotel Casino Cairns – Handwritten Collection, Mantra Esplanade Cairns, Mantra Trilogy Cairns, BreakFree Royal Harbour Cairns, Mercure Cairns, Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort.
Palm CoveAccor: Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort and Spa, Peppers Beach Club & Spa Palm Cove, Mantra Amphora Palm Cove.
Port DouglasMarriott: Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas. Accor: Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort & Spa.

Pullman Cairns International is within walking distance of the Esplanade and the Reef Terminal, according to Accor, and The Reef Hotel Casino sits beside Trinity Inlet and the Cruise Liner Terminal. Port Douglas is a longer trip: Marriott lists self-driving, shuttles, private transfers and a seasonal ferry from Cairns Airport. If you’re hiring a car, see our Cairns car rental guide.

When Cairns Hotel Prices Are Highest

Ironman Cairns. Held in June, it’s one of the city’s biggest annual events, and the Cairns tourism calendar singles out Ironman as one of the events that can affect accommodation availability and prices significantly. Book well ahead if your dates overlap.

July events and school holidays. The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair takes over the Cruise Liner Terminal in July, the Cairns Show and the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival fall in July too, and the June and July school holidays land on top. July and August are the busiest stretch of the year.

The Cairns Festival. The flagship festival runs from late August into early September, and August is the peak month on the Cairns calendar. Its opening weekend is another date that can push up prices and fill rooms.

The wet season. From about December to March the city is at its quietest and most budget-friendly, with fewer tourists, though storms, stinger season and some cyclone risk come with it. The Christmas and New Year school holidays can still lift demand.

Late April, May, September, October and early November are often the best balance of good weather, fewer crowds and better prices. Test a few dates, since a day or two can change the rate.

Last Minute Hotel Deals Cairns: Worth the Gamble?

Hotels with unsold rooms sometimes cut rates close to the date, which is why last-minute searches are popular. In Cairns the catch is the dry-season calendar: around Ironman, the July events and the Cairns Festival, the rooms that remain tend to be expensive, while the wet season offers far more choice. Booking a refundable rate early and rebooking if the price falls is the safer play, once you’ve checked the cancellation terms, which matter more in the wet season when tours can be changed or cancelled.

How to Find a Genuine Hotel Deal in and around Cairns

  • Check the calendar first. Moving a stay away from Ironman, the July events or the Cairns Festival can matter more than any discount.
  • Compare areas before prices. The city centre, Palm Cove and Port Douglas are different trips: the city is the base for reef tours, while the beach resorts are further north.
  • Price the room two ways. Check the hotel’s own site and a booking site, then add up member rates, points and what’s included, because the cheaper headline isn’t always the better value.
  • Read the weather terms in the wet season. Tours can be changed or cancelled in bad weather, so check the hotel’s and tour operator’s cancellation policies, and consider travel insurance.
  • Keep an eye on the price. A refundable booking lets you rebook if the rate falls, so look again a few weeks out.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are Cairns hotel prices cheapest?

Typically in the wet season, from about December to March, with late April, May, September, October and early November also good value outside the school holidays. Prices rise in the dry season, especially July and August, around Ironman in June and the Cairns Festival in late August. Test a few dates, since a day or two can change the rate.

Are last minute hotel deals in Cairns worth it?

Occasionally in the wet season or the shoulder months, but a drop is never guaranteed. During Ironman, the July events and the Cairns Festival the remaining rooms tend to be expensive, so booking a refundable rate early and rebooking if the price falls is safer.

Which Cairns hotels are part of Accor and Marriott?

Accor Cairns hotels include Pullman Cairns International, The Reef Hotel Casino Cairns – Handwritten Collection, Mantra Esplanade Cairns, Mantra Trilogy Cairns, BreakFree Royal Harbour Cairns, Mercure Cairns and Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort. Around Palm Cove, Accor has Pullman Palm Cove Sea Temple Resort and Spa, Peppers Beach Club & Spa Palm Cove and Mantra Amphora Palm Cove, and Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort & Spa is in Port Douglas. Marriott’s only hotel in the region is Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas. IHG doesn’t currently have a hotel in Cairns.

Is there an IHG hotel in Cairns?

Not currently. IHG’s list of Australian hotels doesn’t include Cairns. The former Holiday Inn Cairns Harbourside on the Esplanade now trades as the independent Cairns Harbourside Hotel, so don’t assume IHG One Rewards points or member rates apply there, and check how to book it before you rely on them.

Is it cheaper to book direct or through a booking site?

It varies, so compare both. Booking direct can unlock member rates and perks, and the ALL Accor and Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programs are free to join. A booking site’s headline price may look lower, so check what each rate includes before you decide.

Should I stay in Cairns, Palm Cove or Port Douglas?

Stay in the city centre if you’re doing reef tours, because the Reef Fleet Terminal and the Esplanade are close, and Accor says Pullman Cairns International is within walking distance of both. Palm Cove is a beachfront village about 20 kilometres north, and Port Douglas, further north, has Four Mile Beach and Marriott’s Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort. Beach resorts can cost more than city hotels in peak season, so compare before you commit.
