Qantas has today announced that it plans to launch direct services from Brisbane to San Francisco and Chicago.
Both routes will be operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The Brisbane – Chicago route will be the first direct flight to Chicago from any Australian city.
The new routes are expected to launch by the end of April 2020 and will add more than 170,000 seats across the Pacific each year. Qantas is expected to start selling seats as soon as final approval on the American Airlines and Qantas joint venture is received.
Will award seats be released on the new routes?
We don’t know how many award seats will be released on these services. However, Qantas has previously made a substantial number of economy and business class award seats available on other popular new routes, including the seasonal Sydney to Sapporo service which we previously covered here.
Based on this precedent, we’d expect to see Qantas release award seats on both new routes. Once released, the seats aren’t likely to last long, so you’ll need to act quickly!
