You get the lower price, but no more.

Price beating goes a step further. The retailer matches the competitor’s price and then takes a little extra off. Bunnings beats a lower price by 10% and Officeworks by 5%, while Chemist Warehouse takes an extra 10% off the price difference.

In practice, a beat is worth chasing on high-value items. On a $500 product found $40 cheaper elsewhere, a match saves $40, while a 10% beat on the $460 competitor price saves you another $46.

Which retailers have the strongest price match policies?

Looking at how much they take off, where you can claim and how strict the conditions are, these stand out:

Best overall: Bunnings and Officeworks

Bunnings offers the biggest beat at 10%, and Officeworks beats by 5% while accepting online competitors, including Amazon, with delivery costs factored in. Both are written, well-known policies, so staff are used to processing claims.

Best for electronics and appliances: JB Hi-Fi

JB Hi-Fi only matches, but it accepts claims in-store and online and will consider Amazon AU when the item is sold by Amazon with local stock. Harvey Norman and The Good Guys also match, so it pays to get competing quotes on large appliances.

Best for pharmacy and beauty: Chemist Warehouse

Chemist Warehouse matches a lower price and takes 10% off the difference, both in-store and online. Priceline, by contrast, has no official policy.

Best for liquor: Dan Murphy’s

Dan Murphy’s beats rather than matches, covers both physical stores within 10km and Australian online retailers, and even accepts prices from delivery apps. Liquorland now matches too, but in-store only.

Department stores: David Jones edges out Myer

Both match only, but David Jones accepts claims online through its chat before checkout. Myer‘s policy only applies in-store.

Retailers that don’t have a price match policy

Several big names don’t offer price matching, even though shoppers often assume they do:

Woolworths and Coles: neither supermarket matches competitor prices. Coles runs a scanning promise instead, which gives you an item free if it scans above its ticketed price.

Target and BIG W: no published policy. Some stores may help at the manager’s discretion, but don’t count on it. For similar products, Kmart’s written Price Promise is a safer bet.

EB Games: no formal policy, so any match comes down to the store.

Priceline and BWS: no policy of their own, although their prices are often accepted by competitors. Dan Murphy’s, for example, will match BWS.

What retailers usually exclude

Even generous policies come with conditions. These are the exclusions you’ll run into most often:

Clearance and liquidation sales: almost every retailer excludes stock being cleared out.

Marketplace and third-party sellers: items sold through Amazon Marketplace, eBay or a retailer’s own marketplace rarely qualify.

Membership-only pricing: prices that need a paid membership, such as Costco or Amazon Prime deals, are commonly refused.

Bundles, gift cards and promo codes: the price has to be for the item on its own, at the advertised price anyone can get.

Delivery and installation: some retailers include delivery in the comparison and others ignore it, so check before you claim.

Items that aren’t identical or in stock: the brand, model, size and colour must match, and the competitor must have it available.

Overseas retailers: most policies only accept Australian retailers with local stock.

How to get a price match

Find the identical product. Match the brand, model number, size and colour exactly. A different model or bundle will be knocked back.

Check the competitor has it in stock. Most retailers won’t match a price on something you can’t actually buy.

Capture the evidence. Screenshot the competitor’s page showing the price, product and stock status, or bring the printed catalogue.

Check the retailer’s rules. Confirm whether they accept online competitors, Amazon or delivery-inclusive pricing, and whether claims are in-store only.

Ask before you pay. Most policies only apply at the time of purchase, so raise it at the counter, over the phone or in online chat before checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Which Australian stores offer price matching?

Bunnings, Officeworks, Chemist Warehouse and Dan Murphy’s beat competitor prices.
