Gold Coast Airport sits right on the Queensland/New South Wales border, which is a genuinely unusual feature worth knowing about before you rent, along with the M1 Pacific Motorway that connects the Gold Coast to Brisbane, and the real seasonal squeeze that hits every November. Here’s what actually matters when comparing car rental on the Gold Coast, plus how to pick between the airport and a city pickup.

Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) is unusual among Australian airports in that it straddles the Queensland/New South Wales border, the terminal itself sits right on the state line. This doesn’t affect your rental pickup directly, but it does mean you’re already close to northern New South Wales towns like Tweed Heads the moment you collect your car. The airport is about 25 minutes south of Surfers Paradise, the main tourist hub.

A city pickup, typically in or near Surfers Paradise, makes sense if you’re not flying in, or want a few days at the beach before you need a car. Worth comparing both directly for your dates, since availability and pricing can shift noticeably during peak holiday periods.

The M1 Pacific Motorway is the main road connecting the Gold Coast to Brisbane, and unlike the tollways you’ll find within Brisbane itself, the M1 is a free motorway with no tolls. It’s a straightforward, well-used route, though it can back up significantly during peak holiday travel times and Friday afternoons, worth building in extra time if you’re driving between the two cities during a busy period.
