Adelaide is genuinely one of the easier Australian capital cities to drive in, no tollways to worry about, a close airport, and a CBD laid out on a simple grid surrounded by parklands. Here’s what actually matters when comparing car hire in Adelaide, plus how to pick between the airport and a city pickup.

Adelaide Airport is one of the closest capital city airports to its CBD in Australia, about 7 kilometres, typically a 10 to 15 minute drive outside peak times. For most visitors flying in, an airport pickup is the simplest option, there’s little time penalty compared with getting into the city first.

A city pickup still makes sense if you’re not flying in, or want a day or two exploring Adelaide’s CBD and the surrounding parklands before you need a car. Worth comparing airport and city rates directly for your dates regardless, since the difference isn’t always in the airport’s favour.

Unlike Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, Adelaide doesn’t have an electronic tollway network to navigate. There’s no equivalent of CityLink, WestConnex or CLEM7 here, meaning one less thing to research before you drive, and no risk of an unexpected toll bill showing up on your final rental invoice. It’s one of the genuine, practical advantages of hiring a car in Adelaide over the bigger eastern-state capitals.

Adelaide’s CBD follows the original grid plan laid out by Colonel William Light in 1837, wide, straight streets surrounded on all sides by a ring of parklands. This makes the city centre genuinely easy to navigate once you understand the layout, most CBD streets run in a simple grid pattern, and the parklands ring acts as a natural, easy-to-spot boundary around the whole city centre. It’s a much simpler layout to get oriented in than Sydney’s older, less regular street pattern or Brisbane’s river-bend CBD.

South Australia’s default speed limits are broadly consistent with the rest of the country, but it’s worth knowing that South Australia was one of the earlier states to expand mobile phone detection camera enforcement, and fines for both speeding and mobile phone use while driving apply to the vehicle’s registered operator, which for a rental car means the fine gets passed on to you along with an administration fee. Standard caution around speed limits and phone use applies here as it does everywhere in Australia, but it’s worth being aware the enforcement technology is genuinely active.
