Brisbane’s CBD sits in a tight loop of the Brisbane River, which shapes a lot of how driving through the city actually works, plus the city has its own network of electronic tollways separate from Sydney’s or Melbourne’s. Here’s what actually matters when comparing car rental in Brisbane, plus how to pick between the airport and a city pickup.

Brisbane Airport vs City Pickup

Brisbane Airport has separate domestic and international terminals, connected by the free AirTrain shuttle or a short drive, and they’re far enough apart that arriving at the wrong one for your rental pickup means a genuine delay. Confirm exactly which terminal your provider operates from before you land. The airport itself sits around 20 minutes from the CBD outside peak traffic.

A city pickup is worth considering if you’re not flying in, or if your Brisbane stay starts with a few days in the CBD or South Bank before you need a car. Compare airport and city rates directly for your dates, since airport locations sometimes carry a small facility surcharge a CBD branch doesn’t.

Brisbane’s River Loop and One-Way Streets

The Brisbane River loops around the CBD in a way that genuinely affects how you get around, a straight-line route on a map often isn’t the actual fastest driving route, since you may need to cross a bridge or loop around the river bend to get where you’re going. The CBD itself has a fair number of one-way streets too, worth having your navigation set up before you start driving rather than relying on memory, particularly on your first day in the city.

Brisbane’s Tollways

Brisbane has its own network of electronic tollways, separate from what you’ll find in Sydney or Melbourne. The main ones are CLEM7 and Legacy Way, both tunnels running under the city, AirportlinkM7 connecting the airport to the city’s tunnel network, and the Gateway Motorway and Gateway Bridge on the city’s eastern side. All are cashless, using overhead cameras rather than toll booths.

As with other Australian cities, rental companies typically handle this through an automatic toll pass built into the car, charging you afterward for tolls used plus a daily service fee. Worth confirming with your specific provider how their toll billing works, especially if your route takes you through the tunnel network more than once in a day.

Driving in Brisbane’s Storm Season

Brisbane’s subtropical climate means summer storms can build and hit hard with very little warning, heavy rain, strong wind, and sometimes hail, often clearing again within an hour. If you’re driving during storm season (broadly November through March), it’s worth keeping an eye on the sky and being ready to pull over safely if visibility drops suddenly, rather than pushing on through genuinely poor conditions. Flash flooding on low-lying roads is also a real possibility during heavy storms, never drive through visibly flooded roads regardless of how shallow the water looks.
