Sydney is genuinely the most toll-heavy city to drive in Australia, and that’s the single biggest thing worth understanding before you hire a car here. Beyond the tollway network, there’s also Sydney’s clearway system to know about, real strict no-stopping zones during peak hours that catch out even locals. Here’s what actually matters when comparing car hire in Sydney, plus how to pick between the airport and a city pickup.

Sydney Airport vs City Pickup

Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith) is unusually close to the CBD, about 8 kilometres, roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car outside peak times. That makes an airport pickup a genuinely convenient option for most visitors, since you’re not adding much travel time compared with getting into the city first.

Sydney Airport has both a domestic and an international terminal, and they’re a meaningful distance apart, connected by the T-Bus or a short drive. Make sure you know which terminal your rental desk is actually at before you land, arriving at the wrong one means a longer trip to collect your car than you were expecting.

A city pickup makes sense if you’re not flying in, or if you want a few days exploring central Sydney on foot or by train before you need a car. Worth comparing airport and city rates directly for your dates, since the difference isn’t always in the airport’s favour despite the convenience.

Sydney’s Tollway Network

Sydney has more toll roads than any other Australian city, and nearly all of them are fully electronic with no cash option at all. The main ones you’re likely to encounter: the M4, M5, M7 and M2 motorways, the Eastern Distributor, the Cross City Tunnel, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel, and the newer WestConnex tunnels linking several of these together. NorthConnex adds another tunnel link north of the harbour.

Rental companies handle this the same way most Australian cities do, an automatic toll pass built into the car, with tolls charged back to you afterward plus a daily service fee for any day you use a toll road at all. Given how many tollways Sydney has, and how easy it is to end up on one without meaning to (several arterial-feeling roads are actually tolled), it’s worth asking your specific provider exactly how their toll billing works before you start driving, rather than being surprised by the final invoice.

If you’re sticking to inner-city sightseeing without much cross-town driving, it’s genuinely possible to avoid most toll roads using regular streets, though it usually takes longer.

Clearways: Sydney’s Peak-Hour No-Stopping Zones

Many Sydney roads that look like normal streets with parking during the day become “clearways” at set times, usually weekday mornings and afternoons, where stopping or parking is banned entirely to keep traffic moving. Signs mark the specific hours for each clearway, and they vary street to street, so a spot that’s fine to park in at 11am might be an active clearway at 4pm. Parking in an active clearway typically results in a fine and your car being towed, at your expense, so it’s worth actually reading the signs rather than assuming a street is safe just because other cars are parked there.
